Networks of Modernism - Exhibition Design
Client
Ogunquit Museum of American Art
Year
Spring 2023, on view until 2025
Organized into a series of thematic groupings, Networks of Modernism contextualizes the artists who lived, worked, or frequented Ogunquit within this broader, interconnected story of American modernism. Ogunquit was one hub in a vast network of progressive art schools and communities connecting modern artists across the United States and abroad.
When conceptualizing how to represent the interconnectedness of this artistic community, a data visualization seemed to be the perfect solution. This constellation of artists becomes a visual overview of an entire movement, allowing visitors to digest the artistic activity of the period in a more tangible way.

The paint swatches for the gallery walls were pulled from “Sleeping Girl” by Walt Kuhn, one of the museum’s most famous holdings. These colors were then used throughout all graphic elements to maintain consistency and unity throughout the exhibition.

To commemorate the exhibition, a poster was also commissioned to be sold in the gift shop. Now Museum patrons can enjoy a piece of Networks of Modernism from the comfort of their home.
